56G QSFP+AOC Active Optical Cable Knowledge for Beginners
Knowledge Base + 2023.11.30

As a new type of communication cable, active optical cable AOC has the advantages of high transmission rate, long transmission distance, and low power consumption compared to passive cable or cable-based systems, making it an ideal transmission cable for data centers, consumer electronics, and other fields. Active optical cable AOCs are available in different packages and rates: 10G SFP+ AOC, 25G SFP28 AOC, 40G/56G QSFP+ AOC, 100G QSFP28 AOC, 200G QSFP-DD AOC, and so on.

Before formally introducing 56G QSFP+ AOC active optical cable, let's first understand QSFP+ AOC active optical cable, which is composed of optical fiber and two QSFP+ connectors (one at each end), the optical fiber is a multimode optical fiber, which needs to use an external power supply to realize the conversion of electrical and optical signals, and is mainly classified into 40G QSFP+ AOC active optical cable, 40GQSFP+to 4X10G SFP+AOC active optical cable and 56G QSFP+AOC active optical cable.

The 56G QSFP+AOC Active Optical Cable is a highly efficient, integrated fiber optic cable assembly designed for short-haul data communications and interconnect applications (four-channel, full-duplex), where each channel is capable of transmitting data at up to 14.025Gb/s, providing an aggregate rate of 56Gb/s. The 56G QSFP+AOC Active Optical Cable is designed for short-haul data communications and interconnect applications (four-channel, full-duplex). Maximum link lengths of 100 meters are supported on OM3 multimode fiber and 150 meters on OM4 multimode fiber. Built-in 850nm VCSEL laser, PIN array, integrated driver and receiver chip, support for standards including InfiniBand FDR, 56G Ethernet, 16G Fibre Channel, QSFP MSA and IEEE P802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4, compatible with various brands of servers, switches and transmission equipment.

Transmission Principle:

The two ends of the cable (end A and end B) are QSFP optical module devices, with symmetrical transmission between end B and end A. The data input Din is an electrical signal that is transmitted via an electrical-optical converter. At the A end, the data input Din is an electrical signal, which is converted into a specific wavelength optical signal by the electro-optical converter (E-O Converter), which is input into the fiber optic cable after modulation and coupling, and the optical signal reaches the B end through the fiber optic cable, and the photoelectricity detecting device (O-E Converter) detects the optical signal and then amplifies it, and outputs corresponding electrical signals from the Dout. The corresponding electrical signal is output from Dout.

56G QSFP+AOC active optical cable is suitable for supercomputers and InfiniBand standard-based SDR, DDR and QDR applications, is a solution for data centers and high-performance computers.
