Connection Schemes for Optical Module and Fiber Patch Cord
Knowledge Base + 2024.02.01

Optical modules come in various transmission rates and distances. Therefore, when selecting fiber patch cords for optical modules, it's essential to choose the type that matches the optical module to avoid unnecessary waste or loss.

1.25G Optical Modules

These refer to optical modules with a transmission rate of 1.25G, packaged as SFP, and capable of transmitting up to 160KM. Here are two examples of how 1.25G modules connect with fiber patch cords:

▶1.25G SFP SX optical module operates at a wavelength of 850nm, using LC duplex interfaces, and pairs with multimode duplex fiber patch cords OM1/OM2 for distances up to 550m.

1.25G SFP LX optical module operates at a wavelength of 1310nm, using LC duplex interfaces, and pairs with single-mode duplex fiber patch cords OS2 for distances up to 10KM.

10G Optical Modules

These modules can send and receive 10G data signals per second. Depending on packaging, they include XENPAK, X2, XFP, and the popular 10G SFP+ optical modules:

10G SFP+ LR optical module operates at a wavelength of 1310nm, using LC duplex interfaces, and pairs with single-mode duplex fiber patch cords OS2 for distances up to 10KM.

10G SFP+ SR optical module operates at a wavelength of 850nm, using LC duplex interfaces, and pairs with multimode duplex fiber patch cords OM3 for distances up to 300m.

40G Optical Modules

These modules have a transmission rate of 40G and are packaged as CFP and QSFP+. The 40G QSFP+ optical module is widely used, with various models. Here's the fiber patch cord type for the 40G QSFP+ SR4 optical module:

40G QSFP SR4 optical module operates at a wavelength of 850nm, using MPO connectors, and pairs with OM3 multimode fiber patch cords for distances up to 100M and OM4 multimode fiber patch cords for distances up to 150M.

100G Optical Modules

These modules have a transmission rate of 100G and include CXP, CFP, CFP2, CFP4, and QSFP28 optical modules. The QSFP28 optical module is widely used. Here's an example:

100G QSFP28 LR4 optical module operates at wavelengths from 1295.56nm to 1309.14nm, using CWDM transmission technology and LC duplex interfaces. It pairs with single-mode duplex OS2 fiber patch cords for distances up to 10KM.

In summary, multimode optical modules pair with multimode fiber patch cords, and vice versa. Typically, optical modules with the same transmission rate but different operating wavelengths have different transmission distances. Thank you for your support!
