Optical module as an important part of fiber optic communications, only to ensure its stable operation to ensure the normal operation of optical networks.
The working temperature of the optical module has a greater impact on the use of optical modules, if the working temperature of the optical module is too high or too low, there will generally be a decline in optical power, low sensitivity, poor eye diagrams, in addition to accelerating the aging of the internal components, reducing the life of the optical module, and in serious cases, even direct damage to the optical device.
General optical module operating temperature increases, will lead to a reduction in optical power, APC (optical power automatic control circuit) will maintain the stability of the optical module optical power, but if the temperature continues to rise, the APC will be out of control, the bias current will increase dramatically, if more than the monitoring value will be automatically locked, and finally burned out the driver chip or TOSA.
The operating temperature specifications of optical modules are categorized into commercial grade (0-70°C), extended grade (-20-85°C), and industrial grade (-40-85°C), but the most practical applications are the temperature ranges of commercial grade and industrial grade.
We have to choose the working temperature of the optical module according to the actual use environment. If it is used in data centers and enterprise server rooms, we can use commercial-grade optical modules because air conditioners will be installed inside the data centers and server rooms to maintain the stability of the indoor temperature. If it is used in outdoor, remote mountainous areas, tunnels and other temperature changes in the environment, you need to use industrial-grade optical modules, industrial-grade optical modules will be imported into the temperature compensation software, which is used to ensure that the optical module has a stable supply of operating current, when the temperature changes, the temperature compensation software will take effect.
Nowadays, optical modules can support the DDM function, which monitors the temperature, transmit optical power, receive optical power, current, voltage and other parameters of the optical module as well as temperature compensation.
If it is not within the normal range of values, a DDM alarm will occur. Each optical module has a temperature compensation function. The temperature compensation is automatically controlled by the APC circuit and will change with the temperature. Normally, commercial-grade optical modules in the 0-70 ℃ working environment, the general temperature is not too high, if the temperature is too high will appear DDM alarm.
