As a new type of communication cable, Active Optical Cable AOC has become an ideal transmission cable for data centers, consumer electronics and other fields due to its high transmission rate, long transmission distance, low energy consumption, ease of use and many other advantages, which solves the shortcomings of passive optical cables or copper-based cable systems that can't solve high-density, high-bandwidth applications. However, active optical cable AOC has a variety of packages and rates, including 200G QSFP-DD AOC, 100G/50G QSFP28 AOC, 56G/40G QSFP+ AOC, 32G SFP28 AOC and so on. So, what are the characteristics and classifications of so many active optical cable AOCs?
QSFP+ AOC Active Optical Cable is a highly efficient integrated cable assembly product designed for short-range multi-channel data communication and interconnect applications, with communication distances ranging from 1 to 100 meters, suitable for supercomputers and SDR, DDR and QDR applications based on the InfiniBand standard. And AOC active fiber optic cables have many significant advantages over interconnecting copper cables, such as lower transmission power on the system link, weighing only a quarter of the weight of direct-connecting copper cables, slightly half the size of copper cables, and in the computer room cabling system with better air flow heat dissipation, fiber optic cables bend radius is smaller than copper cables to do, the transmission distance is farther, and the product's transmission performance of the BER is also better.

3: 40G QSFP+AOC Active Optical Cable
40G QSFP+AOC is the core component to realize parallel optical interconnect, which consists of ribbon fiber patch cords connecting two high-speed 40G parallel connectors (as shown in the figure below), with four data channels in each signal direction, each channel can work at 10Gbps, and the transmission distance is generally from 1 to 100m.
Compared to traditional 40G copper cables, 40G active optical cables have incomparable advantages: high transmission efficiency, small size, light weight, low energy consumption; AOC and optical modules compared to the connector in the event of a failure there is no cleanliness problem, no need to carry out the test of the terminal plug, which can help the user to save more time; AOC cabling consistency and repeatability is better, and the closed ends are more easily avoided by the environment and vibration Swinging impact, if there is a failure can be replaced directly after the cost savings; AOC relative to the advantages of optical modules is much cheaper, can save the deployment cost, and the transmission distance can also meet a variety of short-distance transmission application requirements.
Domestic optical interconnect is still in the primary stage of development, R & D technology and process is not mature enough, very few domestic optical device manufacturers can have a complete optical interconnect product line. walsun is the earliest company to enter the commercialization of optical interconnect products in the country, since 2010, walsun began to optical interconnect products of the basic technology and process platform for in-depth research, through three years of hard work. Walsun has finally built a semi-automated optical interconnect product line for the production of multimode 40/100G optical modules and Active Optical Cables (AOCs).
Walsun has been the first to develop 40GE QSFP+ AOC modules in 2011, and has been supplying them to overseas markets in small quantities, and has begun to deploy 10G and 40G active optical cables in China since the beginning of 2013. It is believed that domestic vendors will gradually play a greater value in the future data center and cloud computing arena.
