When using this 100G QSFP28 ZR4 transceiver in short-distance transmission, please add a LC fiber attenuator (≥12dB) to avoid receiver damage and overload.
The QSFP28 SR4 optical module, also known as 100GBASE-SR4 QSFP28 optical module, is designed specifically to support short-distance transmission applications over multimode fibers commonly used in data centers. IEEE has established the 100GBASE-SR4 standard for 100G QSFP28 optical modules. The QSFP28 SR4 optical module utilizes an MTP interface (8 fibers) and supports a transmission distance of 70m with OM3 multimode fibers and 100m with OM4 multimode fibers, making it suitable for short-distance transmission. The QSFP28 SR4 optical module belongs to the parallel 100G optical module category, offering advantages such as high port density and low cost.
The QSFP28 LR4 optical module, also known as 100GBASE-LR4 QSFP28 optical module, complies with the 100GBASE-LR4 standard for 100G long-distance transmission. Similar to the QSFP28 SR4 optical module, the QSFP28 LR4 optical module utilizes four optical fiber channels. However, it incorporates WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology, enabling the multiplexing of different wavelengths from the four optical fiber channels onto a single fiber for transmission. Therefore, when used with single-mode fibers, the QSFP28 LR4 optical module can achieve a transmission distance of up to 10km with duplex LC interfaces, addressing the increasing demand for extended transmission distances in large-scale data centers.
The QSFP28 PSM4 optical module, also known as 100GBASE-PSM4 QSFP28 optical module, features a hot-pluggable QSFP form factor and built-in digital diagnostics capability, offering advantages such as high speed and low power consumption. 100GBASE-PSM4 is a multi-source agreement (MSA) primarily targeted at 100G QSFP28 optical modules. The QSFP28 PSM4 optical module is mainly used for medium to long-distance transmission applications, utilizing MTP interfaces. When used with single-mode multi-core fibers, it can achieve a transmission distance of up to 500m with eight optical fibers, each operating at a data rate of 25Gbps.
The QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module, also known as 100GBASE-CWDM4 QSFP28 optical module, is primarily used in computing, high-frequency trading, and other fields. 100GBASE-CWDM4 is also a multi-source agreement (MSA). The QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module similarly incorporates WDM technology and utilizes duplex LC interfaces. When used with single-mode fibers, it can achieve a transmission distance of up to 2km.
In a 100G network, the selection of suitable QSFP28 optical modules can be considered from the following three aspects:
The QSFP28 SR4 optical module is suitable for short-distance transmission (less than 100 meters) in a 100G network. It utilizes an MTP interface (8 fibers) and supports transmission distances of 70m with OM3 multimode fibers and 100m with OM4 multimode fibers.
For medium to long-distance transmission in a 100G network, the QSFP28 PSM4 or QSFP28 CWDM4 optical modules are suitable choices. The QSFP28 PSM4 optical module utilizes eight parallel single-mode fibers for transmission, achieving a transmission distance of around 500 meters. The QSFP28 CWDM4 optical module, when used with single-mode fibers, can achieve a transmission distance of up to 2 km.
For long-distance transmission (distance exceeding 2 kilometers but less than 10 kilometers) in a 100G network, the QSFP28 LR4 optical module, utilizing duplex LC interfaces, is a suitable choice. It can achieve a transmission distance of up to 10km when used with single-mode fibers.
